What works well with kids
- American Museum of Natural History — the dinosaur halls are reliably excellent for children, the Rose Center planetarium has family programming, and the scale of the building itself is impressive. One of the best family museums in the US.
- Central Park — the carousel, the zoo, playgrounds at every corner, Belvedere Castle, the Conservatory Garden, and enough open lawn for children to run without anyone minding. A full day is easy to fill without spending much.
- The Bronx Zoo — one of the largest and best zoos in the US; budget most of a day. Not cheap, but there are free-admission days (Wednesdays are suggested-donation).
- Jane's Carousel (Brooklyn) — a restored 1922 carousel in a glass pavilion at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Beautiful, genuinely thrilling for small children, and inexpensive.
- Staten Island Ferry — the boat itself is exciting for young children regardless of the skyline view.
- Coney Island — the boardwalk, the beach, and the amusement rides at Luna Park are a full day for kids who like that kind of thing.
Practical logistics
Strollers: manageable above ground, awkward on the subway. Many stations have elevators but not all — the MTA's accessible subway map is worth checking before you plan a route. Cabs and rideshare are often more practical with young children than the subway.
Timing: avoid Midtown at rush hour with children if possible — the 8–9am and 5–7pm crowd density on Midtown sidewalks is genuinely difficult to navigate with a pushchair or a small child.
Food: kids' menus are common at mid-range sit-down restaurants. For quicker meals, pizza by the slice is fast, cheap, and universally appealing to children — every neighbourhood has several options within a short walk.
What to skip with young children
The Empire State Building and Top of the Rock queues are long and the observation experience means little to children under about seven. Broadway shows are dependent on the specific show — some are explicitly family-oriented, many are not. Check the show's own guidance on recommended ages before booking.
